What will my child learn in grade one?

Grade One at a Glance

What are homework expectations for grade one?

Homework in the Calgary Board of Education is regulated by Administrative Regulation 3066 – Homework. In grade 1 it is recommended that families set aside 5-10 minutes each evening for home study. In grade one at Auburn Bay School, homework may consist of:

1.    Literacy - A combination of independent reading, a classroom home reading program, sight word practice, writing projects, conversing about questions posted on classroom blogs or family reading time.

2.    Gathering of artifacts or information to support school study as identified by classroom teacher blogs – for example students may be asked to bring in something that represents their family or a leaf that tells fall has arrived.

Homework may be given as a hard copy or posted on the class website.  Students should be doing no more than ten minutes total of homework practice each night.

How can I support my child's reading at home?

Calgary Reads is an excellent website dedicated to early literacy. The website has numerous resources to support parents reading with young children at home: Calgary Reads also has the Children's Reading Place: "The Children’s Reading Place is a colourful, welcoming heritage house in Inglewood devoted to promoting the love of reading and early literacy. It’s an inspiring and inviting place where children can explore reading spaces, participate in fun literacy activities and choose a free book to take home and keep." Families can book a time to visit the Children's Reading Place here.

Learn Alberta has an online resource centre that families can access from home. The username is LA06 and the password is 4105.

How can I support printing practice at home?

At the beginning of grade one, proper printing is emphasized. If children learn to form and space their letters properly now, writing will be a much easier task as they move up in grades.

These links are for a printing program that show the language that is used in the classroom when practicing printing:
