December 16 - 19

Student Learning
  • The grade ones finished their investigation of apples. We had the chance to participate in 3 different projects: coding, art and design. Here are some examples of our work:

  • This week, we watched the movie, "Inside Out". Before, during and after the movie, we had conversations about what was happening and what students noticed. Here is a summary of some of the conversations that we had:

  • Please ask your child to share some of the observations and connections that they made while watching this film.
  • We sketched Joy and Fear using the guided drawing lessons from Kids Art Hub. Bing Bong, Anger, Sadness and Disgust are all on there as well if your child is interested is sketching them.
  • We have been working on blends such as sp, sn, st and ch. Please look for these blends in books you read together.

Classroom Updates

  • Students went home yesterday with a 'creation station'. They have been challenged to create something using the materials in the bag. Students are encouraged to take a picture of their creation and email it to their teacher or post it to Iris. In January, we will be beginning our science unit on Building Things and we will connect their creations to this unit
  • Our next project in grade 1 will be building log cabins (big enough for a child to walk into) and we are looking for donations of cardboard rolls that we can use for our "logs".

  • From us to you and your families, have a wonderful, safe and restful holidays. We look forward to seeing everyone in the new year and hearing all about your adventures.

December 9 - 13

Student Learning

  • Everyone did such fantastic work at the Christmas concert! Thank you to everyone for their hard work practicing and preparing!
  • In math, we have been working on representing the teen numbers. Our learning target is to recognize that the digit one in 12 means 1 ten. We have been using base ten blocks to make teen numbers. Ask your child what numbers these blocks show:

  • We also read The Napping House and made a picture to represent how many feet were in our house.

  • In our journals, we used the sentence frame, "In winter, I like ..." Ask your child to share what they like to do in winter.

  • We have also started to learn about coding using an app called Scratch Jr. If your child is interested in continuing their coding work at home, it is a free app. More information can be found here: Scratch Jr.
Classroom Updates
  • Thursday, December 19th is an early dismissal day. Students will be dismissed at 12:00 pm. There is no school for students on Friday, December 20th as it is a PD day. We will see everyone back at school on January 6th!

December 2 - 6

Student Learning

  • On Wednesday, we went on our winter pond walk. For our walk, we worked on a thinking routine called Color, Symbol, Image. As we walked, we had to find a color, word or symbol and an image that described winter. Ask your child to share how they described winter.

  • We have also been working with apples this week. In math, we tried to find the mass of an apple in blocks. We made lines of ten when weighing. These were our results:

  • Ask your child to share how they weighed the apple and how they knew they had enough blocks to tell the mass of the apple.
  • We also had an apple taste test this week. We tried five different apples and described the apple's taste and texture. Here are our results:

  • We also created apple sauce using the apples. We used this video for anyone who may want to try this recipe at home: Applesauce Video

  • We also began some apple pop art. Stay tuned for the finished product!
