January 27 - 30

Student Learning

  • In Science, we have been working with the other grade one classes on the Beakerhead Ingenuity Challenge. We worked on creating a machine powered by an elastic that could launch a pom-pom. You can see our submission to Beakerhead about this process here:

  • In math, we have been working on the concept of ten when looking at two digit numbers. We have also been working on adding ten in addition sentences. At home, your child can practice by rolling a dice and adding ten to their roll.

  • In writing, we have been continuing to work on persuasive writing and comic book style story telling through the lens of Mo Willems and his pigeon books. We have been writing our own stories using the Pigeon as an inspiration.

Classroom Updates
  • Our field trip to the CPO to see "The Hockey Sweater" is taking place on Wednesday, February 5th. Please ensure that all fees have been paid through Powerschool or have been brought in by Monday, February 3rd.
  • Jump Rope for Heart fundraising packages went home on Thursday. Forms are due back on February 20th.
  • Book orders were also sent home on Thursday. They are due on February 12th.
  • Valentine's Day is quickly approaching! Cards are completely optional. If your child wishes to bring in cards, please bring in 42 cards signed by your child. January 13 - 17

Student Learning

  • In writing, we read several Pigeon books by Mo Willems.

  • These books were a starting point for us to begin exploring persuasive writing, first and next and the use of speech bubbles to tell a story. Here is an example of our writing work this week:

  • We began our unit on Building Things this week. Each class got the opportunity to participate in three toy building activities. Ask your child to share what they made, how the toy moved and what their favorite toy was.

  • In math, we worked on counting by 2s and addition word problems.

  • Ask your child to solve this word problem:
    • There are 4 books in the bin. 3 more books are added. How many books are in the bin now?
Classroom Updates

January 6 - 10

Welcome back! It was so great to see everyone. We hope you had a relaxing winter break.

Student Learning

  • Our words of the week were: for, from, get, go, going. Please look for these words in books you are reading together.
  • In math, we have been working on the strategy of counting. Ask your child to demonstrate this strategy at home by rolling two dice and counting them together.
  • In science, we have started our unit on building things. We worked with a partner to design and build a tower using pipe cleaners. Here is an example of our work:
  • Ask your child to share what was easy, what was hard and what they would change next time about building with pipe cleaners.
  • In science, we also started to look at how we experience the world through our five senses. We recorded in our visual journal the things that we saw, heard and felt.

  • In writing, we read the first part of the book, "A Ball for Daisy". We then had to create our own ending to the story.

Classroom Updates

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are very excited to invite students in Grades 1 through 4 to join the musical production of Disney’s “The Lion King Kids”Rehearsals will begin on Tuesday, January 21st, 2020 and will continue to take place every Tuesday AND Thursday. Students MUST bring their lunches on rehearsal days. Rehearsals will take place from 11:45 – 12:15 every Tuesday and Thursday at lunch.

If your son or daughter is interested in performing in the musical, the form will need to be filled out and returned to the Mrs. Bourgeois by Friday, January 17th, 2020.

It is, however, most important that you help your child understand the responsibility and commitment that comes with being part of a musical. Excellent behaviour and good manners are expected. Every performer is needed at every rehearsal. With even one child missing, it limits the progress of the group and it changes the sound of the group. In order to develop your child’s individual and group sound, consistent attendance is necessary. It is also important that you explain to your child that the musical is a commitment that lasts from January 2020 – April 2020. Please note there may be other extra-curricular clubs that come up from January – April 2020 on choir rehearsal days. Please remind your child that if they join choir they may not quit to join the other clubs.

***The final production will take place on Thursday, April 30th in the evening at the First Alliance Church. Ticket information will come out closer to the date***

We will send communication regarding rehearsals, concerts, concert dress and any other important information via email and the blog so please ensure your email address is clearly printed on the permission slip.

Should you have any questions regarding the musical please do not hesitate to contact me hmbourgeois@cbe.ab.ca. Thank you in advance for your support and we are looking forward to embarking on this musical adventure together!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Bourgeois and the Auburn Bay Staff

***Return to homeroom Mrs. Bourgeois by Friday, January 17th, 2020***

Forms for the Lion King can be found here.

Students will be studying gymnastics during Phys Ed from Tuesday, January 7th till Thursday, January 24th.
  • In gym, students will be taking part in gymnastics until January 24th. Please keep these things in mind when dressing for school:
  • If you have long hair please try your best to have it in a ponytail so that it does not go in your face
  • Please try to avoid dresses or skirts
  • Please wear clothing that is easy to move in and comfortable. Sweats and a t-shirt are great clothing options (remembering not to have TOO loose of a top on).
Stay warm and have a great weekend!
